She graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2003. Tamaki currently resides in Toronto, Ontario. In interviews, Tamaki has mentioned feeling isolated in high school due to being ethnically mixed.
Her father is Japanese-Canadian and her mother is Egyptian-American. Jillian Tamaki was born in Ottawa, Ontario but grew up in Calgary, Alberta.
